Best Web Hosting in Canada 2026: A Designer’s Honest Comparison
Hi, I’m Charles. I’ve been designing and building websites for Canadian clients for over 20 years, on just about every platform you can name: Canadian shared hosts, Wix, Squarespace, Square Online, GoDaddy, and plenty of WordPress setups. I made this site to share what I’ve learned about which options actually hold up once the intro price runs out and your business starts to grow.
I compared each option on what matters to Canadian businesses, designers and DIYers: total cost in Canadian dollars over 5 years, where your data is stored, uptime, ownership and lock-in, room to grow, and help when you need it.

Take this review with a grain of salt
I’ll be blunt: every hosting review, this one included, is someone’s opinion, and I’ve already told you I work with GoWiz. So don’t treat my scores as gospel. Here’s what I actually believe after 20 years of building sites: in 2026, the hosting itself matters far less than it used to. Most reputable hosts run on solid servers in good data centres, and the differences in speed and uptime between them are small. What separates a website that thrives from one that quietly falls apart is having a real expert, a Wiz, in your corner: someone who fixes what breaks, tells you which plugin not to install, and keeps your site healthy year after year. That’s what I’m really recommending.
Why I moved my clients to GoWiz
Every host sells you a server. GoWiz gives you a Wiz, and it isn’t tied to any one data centre. These are the five situations that convinced me:
1. An update breaks your site
A cheap host keeps the server running, but a broken plugin is “your problem.” At GoWiz, a Wiz fixes the website itself, not just the server under it.
2. Your site gets hacked
Other hosts often suspend the account or sell you a cleanup. GoWiz includes hack and malware removal, and will clean and migrate a hacked site when you switch.
3. The renewal bill arrives
That $2.95 intro price can turn into $9 to $17 a month. Look at what you’ll pay in year four, not month one. GoWiz’s renewal prices are published up front, in Canadian dollars.
4. Your web designer disappears
Plenty of businesses have a WordPress site built by someone who moved on. GoWiz picks up where they left off, without forcing a rebuild.
5. Your data centre falls behind
Most hosts are locked into their own facilities. GoWiz already uses advanced SOC 2 data centres in Canada, the USA and France, and can move customers to better facilities when needed, while keeping your data in Canada if that’s what you need. Your hosting keeps up; your Wiz stays the same.
The short answer
GoWiz: Canadian-hosted WordPress you own, priced in Canadian dollars
For most Canadian small businesses, designers and DIYers, GoWiz gave me the best mix of low long-term cost, real ownership, data kept in Canada and a straight path to hands-off help. Hosting starts at $3.99/mo CAD, renewing at $7.99/mo CAD, with a free .ca or .com domain for the first year, daily backups, an off-server weekly backup, free SSL, free migration and hack/malware removal included.
| Rank | Option | Best for | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GoWiz | Owning your site, data in Canada, growing into agency help | $3.99/mo, renews $7.99 (CAD) |
| 2 | HostPapa | Lowest sticker price for basic cPanel hosting | $2.95/mo (3-yr term), renews $8.99 (CAD) |
| 3 | GoDaddy | One-stop domains + hosting, phone support | $5.49/mo first year, regular $16.99 (CAD) |
| 4 | Squarespace | Polished templates, design-first portfolios | From about $19/mo billed annually |
| 5 | Wix | Fast drag-and-drop for beginners | Light $17/mo, Core $29/mo annual (CAD) |
| 6 | Square Online | Shops already using Square POS | Free plan; Plus from $35/mo (CAD) |
| 7 | “AI Hosting” lifetime deals | Hobby projects only | One-time fee plus upsells |
Chart: what you actually pay over 5 years (CAD)
Intro prices are designed to look good. What matters is the total once the plan renews. Here’s the 5-year subscription cost of each entry plan in Canadian dollars, before taxes, domains and add-ons.
How I calculated it: GoWiz Pro 12 months at $3.99 then 48 at $7.99. HostPapa Essentials 36 months at $2.95 then 24 at its regular 3-year rate of $8.99; it has the lowest sticker price, but GoWiz includes daily backups and malware removal, while HostPapa’s backups are free for the first year only and then from $47.99/yr (the “+ backups” bar), with SiteLock malware removal extra on top. GoDaddy Economy 12 months at $5.49 then 48 at its listed regular price of $16.99; GoDaddy does include daily backups. Wix and Square at their published annual-billing monthly rates for 60 months. Squarespace is left off because it may bill Canadians in US dollars; its plans start around $19/mo billed annually. Square also takes 2.8% + 30¢ per online sale, plus 1.5% on cards issued outside Canada.
Why the website builders cost so much more
Wix, Squarespace and Square Online bundle hosting, the editor and their app store into one subscription. That’s convenient, but you rent everything, and the price climbs as soon as you need to sell online (Wix requires Core at $29/mo to sell). With WordPress on GoWiz, the core software, thousands of themes and most plugins are free, and you’re only paying for the hosting.
Price alone shouldn’t decide where you host
A few dollars a month between hosts is easy to compare. What’s harder to see in a pricing table is what good advice is worth. In my experience, the biggest website costs don’t come from the hosting bill. They come from a wrong plugin, a hack, a botched migration, a site that never ranks, or paying someone to rebuild what could have been fixed.
That’s where GoWiz earns its place. Its human Wiz experts help customers make the right calls before problems happen: which tools to use, what to fix, what to skip. Over the years, that advice can save far more than the difference in monthly price between any two hosts on this page.
Where your data lives: hosting in Canada

For many of my Canadian clients, especially in health, legal, finance and anything touching Quebec’s Law 25, the first question is where customer data is stored. This is where GoWiz stands out from the builders.
| Option | Where your site lives | Uptime commitment |
|---|---|---|
| GoWiz | SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified data centres in Canada, with the option of the USA or France if you sell abroad | 99.99% average availability in Canada and France; US data centres backed by a 100% network and power SLA |
| HostPapa | HostPapa’s data centres; no region choice on shared plans | 99.9% uptime guarantee |
| GoDaddy | GoDaddy’s data centres | 99.9% uptime guarantee |
| Wix / Squarespace / Square | The platform’s own cloud; you can’t choose Canada | No uptime SLA I could find on standard plans |
Being able to say “your data is stored in Canada, in a certified facility” makes privacy conversations with clients much simpler. And when a client starts selling into the US or Europe, GoWiz can host that site in the USA or France from the same account.
What the SLA numbers mean: a 99.99% target allows about 4 minutes of downtime a month, versus about 43 minutes at 99.9%. An SLA means the provider commits to that level and credits you if they miss it.
Ownership: who really owns your website?

This is the question I wish more clients asked before signing up for a website-as-a-service platform.
On GoWiz (WordPress)
- Your site is standard WordPress: files and database you can download any time
- Move to any host in the world if you ever want to
- Any theme, any plugin, any developer, including bilingual English/French setups
- cPanel or a modern next-generation control panel, depending on the region you host in
On Wix, Squarespace, Square
- Your design lives inside their proprietary builder
- You can’t take the site itself to another host; leaving usually means a rebuild
- You’re limited to their apps and their pricing changes
- Stop paying and the site goes offline
I’ve rebuilt more Wix and Squarespace sites from scratch than I can count, simply because the client outgrew the platform. That rebuild is the hidden cost nobody puts in the pricing table.
Building your site: AI speed without the lock-in
The website builders sell ease of use, and five years ago that was a fair trade. Today, GoWiz lets you build a real WordPress site by chatting with your favourite AI, with human Wiz experts to step in when you get stuck. You get the speed of an AI builder, but the result is a normal WordPress site that belongs to you, not a page trapped in someone’s editor.
The springboard: from DIY to full agency service without moving

Photo: Pexels
This is the biggest reason GoWiz is my top pick. Most small businesses start doing things themselves, then need help as they grow. On most platforms, “getting help” means hiring an agency that wants to rebuild your site somewhere else. On GoWiz, you climb the same ladder on the same server, with no migration and no rebuild:
| Stage | GoWiz option | Price (CAD) | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. DIY | Pro hosting | $3.99/mo, renews $7.99 | You build, with cPanel and AI tools |
| 2. Occasional help | Pay-as-you-go Web Wiz hours | From $49.99/hr (10-hour pack) | A Wiz fixes or builds what you can’t; unused allocated time is credited back |
| 3. Managed | Managed WordPress | $10.99/mo, renews $21.99 | Updates handled, plus SOS developer intervention if the site goes down |
| 4. Hands-off | White Glove WordPress | $54.99/mo | Up to 1 Wiz hour/month of changes, fixes and improvements included |
| 5. Full agency | Website + SEO | Monthly plan, see GoWiz | GoWiz builds your site and works on ranking it |
Each step is an upgrade in the same account: you pay the prorated difference and keep your site, your email and your domain exactly where they are. Compare that with the usual path: outgrow Wix, pay an agency several thousand dollars to rebuild on WordPress, migrate the domain and email, and lose a few weeks along the way.
For designers: GoWiz Web Wiz is built to work alongside you, not replace you. Senior developers can take on the hard problems while you keep the client, and the partner program pays you for hosting your clients there. That’s a much easier way to start offering agency-style services than building a team from scratch.
Chart: my overall scores
These are my own ratings out of 10, weighing long-term cost, data location, ownership, room to grow and support.
Side by side: ratings and features
A green check means it’s included or available as standard; a red X means it isn’t, or costs extra.

- Grow from DIY to full agency service without migrating

#2 HostPapa
A long-established Canadian host with cPanel, a 99.9% uptime guarantee and good onboarding (including a free one-on-one session). It has the lowest sticker price here, $2.95/mo on a 3-year term, and it publishes its renewal rates openly, which I respect. Watch the add-ons: backups are only free for the first year on Essentials, SiteLock malware removal costs extra, and the intro price requires paying for 3 years up front.
#3 GoDaddy
The most familiar name, with phone support, daily backups included and everything in one account. The first-year price of $5.49/mo is attractive, but the listed regular price of $16.99/mo makes it one of the most expensive hosting options here over five years.
#4 Squarespace
The best-looking templates of the builders and a smooth editor, which is why designers like it for portfolios. Check whether your account is billed in US dollars, there’s no live phone support, and your site can’t leave the platform.
#5 Wix
The easiest way for a beginner to get something online today, with a huge app market, built-in AI tools and Canadian-dollar pricing. The trade-off is lock-in: you can’t export the site, and selling online requires the Core plan at $29/mo or more.
#6 Square Online
Excellent if you already run a shop on Square’s point of sale, because inventory syncs automatically. As a general website it’s limited, the Plus plan starts at $35/mo, and online sales carry 2.8% + 30¢ processing, plus 1.5% on foreign cards.
#7 “AI Hosting” lifetime deals
You’ll see AI-branded hosting sold for a one-time fee through launch funnels, followed by a chain of upsells. I can’t recommend these for a business: there’s usually no published uptime SLA, no clear data centre information, and a one-time payment doesn’t fund years of servers and support.
My verdict: hosting with a Wiz included
For all-round website creation, maintenance, future-proofing, cost, value, data location and ownership, GoWiz is my top pick for Canada. It costs less than the website builders over any realistic period, keeps your data in certified Canadian data centres, bills in Canadian dollars, leaves you owning a portable WordPress site, and lets you move from doing it yourself to full agency service without ever moving your site.
Who should pick something else? If you already sell through Square’s point of sale and only need a simple online store, Square Online is the path of least resistance. If you want a one-page portfolio this weekend and never plan to grow it, Wix or Squarespace will get you there quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Does it matter if my website is hosted in Canada?
For many businesses it does. Keeping customer data in Canada simplifies privacy obligations under PIPEDA and Quebec’s Law 25, and Canadian servers are closer to Canadian visitors.
Can I move my Wix or Squarespace site to GoWiz?
Your content (text, images, products) can be moved, but the design has to be rebuilt in WordPress, because those platforms don’t export their sites. GoWiz migration is free for sites coming from other hosts, and a Wiz can handle the rebuild by the hour.
Can I have a bilingual English/French site?
Yes. WordPress handles bilingual sites well with plugins like Polylang, which the website builders make much harder.
